Vitamin B12 Deficiency - What You Don't Know CAN Hurt You!

In today's fast paced society one of the hardest things to do is eat a diet that has all the nutrition that our bodies require. So much of the food we eat is grown in soil depleted of nutrients or it is highly processed. As a result many of our foods contain very few vitamins and minerals. When it comes to nutrition we do the best we can and hope that popping a multi-vitamin will make up for what's lacking in our diet. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts we still often end up really missing the mark in terms of getting everything our bodies need. As a result, over time we can end up seriously deficient with regards to crucial vitamins and minerals.

B Vitamin Supplement

One commonly occurring deficiency is vitamin B12. At least four out of every 10 Americans have a B12 deficiency at the clinical level. Millions of people take in just enough of this vital nutrient to get by. A vitamin B12 deficiency occurs a lot more frequently than most people realize. Many people suffer from vitamin B12 deficiency symptoms every day and are completely unaware of it. The symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency can range from mild to very serious. If the B12 deficiency continues for decades the long term results can be irreversible and even deadly.

What are the Symptoms of a Vitamin B12 Deficiency?

It is really important to be aware of symptoms that may be caused by a vitamin B12 deficiency sooner than later. Since the effects can be cumulative, it is easy to just chalk them up to aging when they are only mild to moderate. There are many vitamin B12 deficiency symptoms, but some of the more common ones include fatigue, trouble thinking clearly, bleeding gums, moodiness, nervousness, lightheadedness, and constipation. More serious long term symptoms can include heart disease, stroke, and dementia such as Alzheimer's disease. Let's take a look at a few of these symptoms of a vitamin B12 deficiency.

Fatigue can be caused by a vitamin B12 deficiency because this vitamin plays a key role in the production of red blood cells. These blood cells help to properly transport oxygen throughout our bodies. Not only is this oxygen necessary for energy, a low number of red blood cells causes anemia. When you are anemic you may feel lethargic and weak. A B-12 deficiency can also contribute to feelings of tiredness because this vitamin helps us metabolize our food adequately. Proper metabolization of the food we eat helps break down carbohydrates into glucose. Glucose gives you energy when it is released into your system.

Another one of the vitamin B-12 deficiency symptoms is mood irregularity. Mood swings, nervousness, and feeling depressed can be related to low levels of this often ignored nutrient. Vitamin B12 helps our brains produce serotonin, which is a brain chemical that helps us feel good. B12 also helps in the manufacture of melatonin, which helps regulate our sleep. Also, this vitamin assists in properly maintaining our nervous system overall which is important for good mental health.

Hardening of the arteries and heart disease are two very serious B12 deficiency symptoms. Our bodies naturally contain an amino acid called homocysteine (HCY) which can be toxic if the amount gets too high. Vitamin B12 helps to keep the level of HCY in check. Toxic levels can be very destructive. This is because HCY has harmful effects on the very cells which make up our arteries and veins. The damage can lead to heart attacks and stroke.

A B-12 Deficiency can have Serious, Long-Term Consequences

Many people with symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency complain that they have difficulty thinking clearly or remembering things. Because these two symptoms are often falsely attributed to "getting older," they are sometimes ignored and allowed to progress. Unfortunately, they may be a precursor to dementia which includes Alzheimer's disease. Dementia is a progressive decline in one's cognitive functioning. Memory loss, confusion, getting lost easily, and paranoia are all symptoms of dementia. Sadly, there is no known cure at this time for dementia.

While these are not all the symptoms of a vitamin B12 deficiency, they will hopefully make you realize just how important this nutrient is to your health. These symptoms may be caused by a variety of things, but it is still important to be sure that you are getting enough B12 every day. It is virtually impossible to get too much B12, as it is considered non-toxic. Taking a quality B12 supplement in addition to a healthy diet is one of the best ways to prevent a serious B12 deficiency.
